The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles will suspend your NC driver's license or your privilege to drive in the state of North Carolina, if you have an out of state license, for at least the following reasons:

  1. Exceeding 55 mph while exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 mph
  2. Accumulating 12 license points within 3 years
  3. 2 or more speeding convictions greater than 55 mph in any 12 month period
  4. Speeding in excess of 70mph in a 55 mph zone
  5. Speeding in excess of 80 mph in a 70 mph zone
  6. A conviction for careless and reckless driving within 12 months of a conviction for speeding in excess of 55 mph
NOTE: If you have a commercial, school bus, or other specialized driver's license you may have additional restrictions. If your livelihood depends on driving, contact an attorney. Click on "Where To Get Help".

OUT OF STATE DRIVER'S: When you are convicted of a traffic offense in North Carolina, the Division of Motor Vehicles assigns you a tracking number. Each time you get a ticket, the DMV will add that to your NC record. Your driving privilege will be suspended just like a NC licensee.
